HERMIT SIGNALSFive years ago I swooped beneath
this geologic curl that dolls up
the surly shore
like a stone pompadour
tridented in its swagger of a swish
into crew cut remission
by an unimpressed sea god
and his teal army of chicanes
shouldering its way up the beach
and closing in on my crescent corner
of compressed Society like spilled paint

I was a token boy
colour-blinded by sunset's seductive frills
when I made for the shadow in protest
to prove the weight of liberty
is malleable when exposed
to a hermit's nocturnal fire
furnacing the bliss of solitude

The grey neutrality of my seclusion
fled the waves' advancing brainwash

A NIGHT IN THE WATER TEMPLEWho's unearthly pen of purpose
spiked the medicinal lingo of
my life's mission statement with
the sweet calligraphy of a
redeemer's destiny

On what grounds of anticlimactic
credentials was I plucked from
the frozen context of forest green ignorance
and assigned to this twitchy box of a bath house
and its drowned doors spiteful currents
self-appointed damsels and
sea dweller duds

This I ponder as a hero
pampers his beleaguered feet
beneath the towel of an opportune torch
and inquires of his whimsical pet pearl
why an instrument of heaven's orchestra
could not compose a path to a shoehorn

PANGAEAThrough many dreary hours
I have slumbered ever so slightly
to your level right
shushing my imagination with diplomacy
in netted palms of perspiration

Brittle is the grapple on my party
to govern from the middle
in spite of swelling blood rebellions
springing from the hammock of my stomach
when the opportunity for soft and shapely
summits arises

Inspiration is born to immerse
its hard agenda through the satin gap
between us and negotiate a love Pangaea
through a man and woman's perfect fit

SLEEPLESSThe moon was my alarm
shaking off a sleep that felt like harm
I did what intuition said
I called you but you were in bed
You were resting for a funeral
You thought your sleep had died as sure as life
As my voice pondered what to say
I dipped my thoughts into our silence
Measuring, encoating my concerns
The night acted out a scene through us

You are in mourning
and I am in darkness
staring down the moon
from the edge of sleep
And the end is here
and the end is there
and we are nowhere

Tomorrow in ourselves
we may wake up beside each other
mindful of the need to speak
beneath the steps of space that creak

Brimstone sentiments accrue between my ears
Infernos of intent evaporate the frazzled tears
I was collecting for a pool of solace in which I could dip
my flaming head when hot environments unlocked my frozen lip

Sometimes I think my stomach imitates a salt mine
when I swallow the prescribed advice on which I daily dine
Nightly I receive the water from the serpent glass I swear
is filled by no one but replenished by sin vapors hiding in my air

where yawns
snuggle up beneath your tongue
and sleep
through dependency
while your cheekbones
seize the opportunity
to stretch your face
and take your eye
balls down with them
and like a mood swing
make you feel
nonchalantly awake

as if on liberated slinkys

those yawns
you so terribly depend on
to shut out
the lights on your stubborn
insomniac ball
of a brain

WHEN I WAS YOUNGI wrote something for you,
the loveliest thing
my muse ever spirited me
to commit to paper.
Something that would have made you
dip your fingers in your hair.
Something that would have sent your heart
fluttering on a fit of enlightened ecstasy.
Something that would have flooded your mouth
and saturated your lips.
Something that would have made you speak.
But how many masterpieces are there in the world
residing in stale drawers and attics
subletting with the dust time drops
as an ominous memento?
Masterpieces robbed of purpose
left to die in abstract inactivity
or be unearthed too late for worth

FESTIVAL SUNDAYEvening winds crept up on the air:
silent and assertive predecessor of the dark
sharp enough to pinch, yet not to penetrate
and the cue to be prepared to celebrate.
But for what, they had to choose.

The Unknown Feast has rung their year
and wrung out all the remnants of
The Feasts of the Unknown -
how it used to be, when the Unknown was a mystery;
when all were organizers.
This year, some have set out be entertainers.

Evening winds - the final of the year -
have braced the blood for dual celebration.
Two celebrating groups have claimed this night;
one of them may fall.

DISCONNECTED In the vast, schizophrenic jungle that is cyberspace, they crossed paths. A conversation ensued.
"You're quite the charmer," she typed. "You seem to know exactly what to say to make a girl feel good."
"No," he typed in reply. "I'm actually quite shy. Talking on the 'net is easy. I really wouldn't be this talkative in person." The pace of his typing accelerated. He was panicking.
"Don't be so modest," she typed back. "You're too hard on yourself. I saw your picture on your homepage. You're too cute to be modest." She added a colon and right bracket for emphasis. He reddened and smiled.
The soothing memo

BLOCKCan I sit and write a simple tune
or will I sit and summon spiders

Will a wayward ear latch on to paper thoughts
or is a muse just a glorified insider
like an undercover officer
pretending to befriend
maybe even smart enough
to damn the doings and defend
the doer trapped beneath
the wet blanket of a habit
feeling for a crease
to isolate with prick and stab it

Should I settle for the role
of shepherd of this ivory prairie
self-indulgent dozen-dimer
sworn protector of sublime geography
No, the dew-flossed webs of my attire

Fastened to these sticky strings of evolution
I am like a library orphan

JUST ASKINGIs it absolutely necessary
to lament a passing fancy
that wore out its welcome
on the way to passing for a dream?

the black hole takes shape
in the whirlpool
where neither swimmer nor murderer

I needed practice after six weeks of nothing and I always thought this was one of the coolest rock group logos ever so I decided to draw it (from scratch, no tracing, etc.). It's the closest I could come to being perfectly symmetrical but there are a few parts that are off, nothing too noticable I think though.

(Do bands even have logos anymore? Seems like a lot of them just spell their name out in bold letters or something along those lines. I blame the constraints of CD packaging for that.)

Now if only I could get "So Fine" out of my head...
